Bundaberg City Council

TRADE WASTE is any liquid waste, other then domestic sewerage and is controlled by Council through its 'Trade Waste Policy', under the provisions of Sewerage and Water Supply Act. If your business discharges any liquid waste to the sewer, other than domestic sewerage, then you discharge Trade Waste, and require a permit.

Illegal discharges cost the community money by damaging the sewerage system and its components, it also affects the pumping and treatment costs of the waste. Unsewerable substances can cause blockages in sewers pipes and have the capability of creating explosive conditions within sewer pipes. They also have the potential to completely destroy a sewerage treatment plant, costing the community thousands of dollars to remedy.

Trade Waste Requirements

A Trade Waste permit must be obtained from Council prior to any discharge to the sewers. It is the responsibility of the discharger to ensure that the trade waste discharged complies with the provisions of their permit and the policy.

To achieve compliance with trade waste parameters it is often necessary for the installation of pre- treatment devices to provide on site treatment of the trade waste. It may be necessary for you to seek advice from Councils Trade Waste Officer to determine the most suitable and cost effective devices for your premises.

Permits
Category 1. Low Volume and/or Low Concentration $63.25
Category 2. Low Concentration but High Volume. $190.60
Category 3. High Volume and or High Concentration. $369.60

Councils Trade Waste Policy reflect the user-pays principle. It encourages the reduction of unsewerable wastes by providing clear economic incentives for the reduction of wastes from premises. Penalty Charges may be applied for a breach of the Trade Waste Policy, and costs to cover cleanup will be recovered from a polluter, penalty charges also may be applied to the licence.

Application

Application forms are available from Councils Health and Environmental Services Department and should include a schematic site plan showing location of pretreatment devices and sampling point. Disposal of trade waste to the sewer is not permitted until a permit is issued by Council.
