Bundaberg City Collection
The Arts Centre’s role is to develop preservation and conservation plans and practices to ensure the future protection of this Collection and to make it accessible to the Bundaberg community through exhibitions and public display.
Dr Egmont Schmidt Memorial Collection
This sub-collection of the Bundaberg City Collection was formed and nurtured with reason by the late Bundaberg physician Dr Egmont Theodore Carl Schmidt (1886-1956). The original collection was a historically important and culturally valuable private collection of early 20th Century paintings and prints. This philanthropic development is inextricable from the formation of the Bundaberg Art Society, established in 1939 with Dr Egmont Schmidt as instigator and first President.
On the passing of Dr Schmidt in 1956, these six works were formally donated to the Bundaberg Art Society by artists Noel Wood, Bessie Gibson, John Noel Kilgour, George Gorden Colville, William Fulton-Brown and Thomas Balfour Garrett. They formed a nucleus for a collection for a forthcoming city gallery, in accordance with the original aim and benevolent intent of Dr Schmidt.
With the opening of the Civic Centre in 1962, the collection was housed in the hallways and supper rooms of the building. However, in 1982 the Bundaberg Art Gallery officially opened in the historic School of Arts Building where the collection gained a more permanent home, under the jurisdiction of the Bundaberg Art Society.
In 1992 the Bundaberg Art Society’s Collection including the original Schmidt works and works collected in a similar vein were donated to the Bundaberg City Council as the trustee for the City. They were then recognised by the City as the Dr Egmont Schmidt Memorial Sub-Collection.

The Bundaberg City Council Corporate Collection
These works have been acquired by donation, from the Bundaberg City Council acquisitive prize at the annual Bundaberg Art Festival, the Lions Club of Bundaberg South’s donations through Art Festival acquisitions or from purchases made by the Bundaberg Art Festival Committee. These works vary greatly in media and style and are intended for the specific purpose of hanging in the Bundaberg City Council Chambers and other City Council buildings.
The Bundaberg Arts Centre Collection
These works have been donated, purchased by the Bundaberg Arts Centre (or former Bundaberg Art Gallery), or acquired through the Bundaberg Art Festival. These works vary in media and style; however they represent the historical and visual arts heritage of the City of Bundaberg and district. This collection is the main focus of acquisitions in the immediate future to ensure that local significant artists are recognised through the collection.
Bundaberg Art in Public Spaces Collection
“The term “Art in Public Spaces” is defined in the widest possible sense as artistic works created for, or located in part of a public space or facility and/or accessible to members of the public. Public art includes works of a permanent or temporary nature located in the public domain. This is the newest sub-collection, introduced in 2003 to address the documentation and preservation of the growing number of public artworks in the City. These works have been donated, purchased or specifically commissioned. The first editions to this collection are the sculptures by Dave Machen and John Olsen at the Riverside Parklands Stage One Development.
